Hi Ian,

I’ve enjoyed reading some of the papers you wrote as a student at Toronto Baptist Seminary. You are a good writer, and I appreciate your ability to summarize large sections of material in a shorter format. I’m a Baptist church-planting missionary in Colombia who happens to love church history. I’m interested in the Th.M. at Toronto because it looks feasible for someone who lives overseas, and I am very interested especially in anything that Dr. Haykin could teach me. I wondered if you could shoot me an email so I could ask you a few questions about your experience there. I also understand that you’re probably very busy, so if you don’t have time don’t feel bad.

Hi Vaidas,

I would highly recommend anything by Everett Ferguson, including the two volumes you suggest. His book on baptism in the early church is outstanding as well. Other volumes on the early church I would recommend are: F.F. Bruce’s “The Spreading Flame” which you can often find second hand for a good price. Henry Chadwick’s “The Early Church” in the Penguin series is also stellar and shorter than Bruce. Ivor Davidson has two good volumes on the early church in the Baker series on church history which may be out of print now. For volumes of a bit deeper scholarship, I would recommend the first volume in Jaroslav Pelikan’s five volume series on historical theology. I would also say that for further studies in patristics, you need to have Johannes Quasten’s “Patrology.” Thanks for commenting!

Ian, is it worth to buy Everett Ferguson “Early Christians Speak” (2 volumes) and study from it about the early church? Or could you recomend some other books in order to research the early church?

Ian, thank you very much. I didn’t hear about H. Oliphant Old before. I also contacted your seminary (Toronto Baptist Seminary) and I wanted to study there, but they don’t give scholarships for international students as far as I understood. So I applied to Truett seminary, Baylor University in TX. I was accepted. So if the good Lord allows I will start MDIv studies at Truett August, 2010. Also I am writing my thesis in Vilnius University theme “Baptist History in Lithuania 1918-1940″. Ian, are you familiar with European interwar Baptist history and doctrines?
